Seventeen years ago, Hana Assafiri opened up now renowned Moroccan Soup Bar, employing women struggling with poverty and domestic violence. With its unique spoken word menu and its waitstaff dressed in hijabs, the restaurant was progressive in its embracing of diverse cultures and breaking down societal barriers. Recently, Hana has taken on a new venture, Moroccan Deli-cacy, a deli and canteen which provides more than just authentic Moroccan food. Following recent events of radicalisation and extremism, there is an increasing fear and hate of Muslims in the Australian community. In an effort to create understanding and positive relationships, Hana invites Muslim women to her restaurant for ‘Muslim speed dating’ where people have the chance to ask a Muslim anything and where no question is off the table.
